Heart Shaped Sugar Cookies As Valentine Gifts For Kids

Heart Shaped Sugar Cookies As Valentine Gifts For Kids

My husband and I don't make a huge deal of Valentine's Day. We have a nice home-cooked meal with dessert, and we exchange cards and a small gift. Nothing too big.

But I do love sending the kiddles with special things to school for their class!

For Valentine's Day this year they're taking some small heart shaped biscuits in clear bags.

I made small biscuits cause if other kids are like mine, they like to think they have multiples of things, even if they're small!

I used a basic sugar biscuit recipe and white and pink royal icing. I don't own a piping bag so I put the icing into zip loc bags and just snipped a couple of millimetres off one corner. And then I did my dodgy piping! Piping straight is REALLY not something I excel at! LOL

I stamped "Happy Valentine's Day" on some card stock and folded it over the top of some small zip-loc bags, stapling it in place. I have 2-3 biscuits in each bag and they're all set to go to school.

Valentine Biscuits and Royal Icing Recipes NEW
by: Kylie

Here are the recipes I used for the Valentine heart shaped biscuits and the royal icing.

Biscuits:

  • 185g slightly softened butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1tsp vanilla essence
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 1tsp baking powder

Method:
  1. Cream the butter and sugar and vanilla with hand-held beaters until it changes colour and becomes lighter. Beat in the egg.
  2. Using a wooden spoon or spatula, mix in the flour and baking powder. Once combined, form into a ball and wrap in cling wrap and pop it in the fridge to chill for 15 minutes.
  3. Preheat oven to 180 degrees celcius.
  4. Once the dough is chilled, roll the ball out onto a floured surface until it is 5mm thick.
  5. Use a small heart cutter dipped in flour to cut the hearts. Place them on a tray with baking paper on it, leaving a gap between each biscuit as they do expand slightly.
  6. Bake for approximately 15 minutes or until the biscuits are a golden brown colour. Cool on a wire rack.

Royal Icing:

  • 2 egg whites
  • icing sugar (approximately 3 cups)
  • red food colouring

When I make royal icing I never measure anything. I start by beating the egg whites until they are fluffy. Then I start adding the sugar 1 scoop at a time.

I keep going until the mixture is very thick and glossy and my beaters are starting to make a funny noise and smell like they're over-heating! LOL

I removed half the mixture and put it in a zip loc bag ready to pipe. The other half still in the bowl I added red food colouring to. Then I scooped it into a zip loc bag too.

I just snipped a tiny bit off the corner and piped my design on the heart shaped biscuits. :)

Smart Valentine Gifts For Kids NEW
by: Angie

Hi Kylie,

What a beautiful job you did on your heart shaped cookies. I know you said you can't pipe very straight, but they look delightful to me! :)

I think heart shaped biscuits with royal icing are perfect homemade Valentine ideas for the kids to take to school for all their mates.

We'd love it if you'd take a few moments and add your sugar cookie recipe and royal icing recipe, too, if you made it from scratch.

I'm sure other people will come along and find it quite handy to have the recipes right here so they can whip up their own for the kiddies in their own lives. :)

Good luck with your entry into the Valentines Day ideas contest!
