Hum-Dinger Balls

by Caren Breland
( Butler, Ala.)

Here's a recipe for Hum-Dinger Balls that are a Christmas candy tradition from when I was a girl.

This is a quick little candy recipe but tastes like it took a lot of work. My aunt used to make them and bring them for Christmas dinner. They always make me think of those happy past family times when I was younger.

  • 2 sticks margarine, melted
  • 1 can coconut
  • 1 lb. dates
  • 2 cups pecans
  • 4 cup Rice Krispies
  • 1 box brown sugar
  • powdered sugar

  1. Melt margarine.
  2. Add dates and brown sugar and cook till well blended together.
  3. Add the coconut, pecans, and Rice Krispies. Stir all together and form the mixture into balls.
  4. Roll the balls in powdered sugar.

Thanks Caren!

How Many Cups in Box of Brown Sugar?
by: Angie

Hmmm. That's a good question. It's been a few years since I used brown sugar from a box. If my memory serves me correctly, it works out to be about 2 1/2 cups firmly packed.

I'll have to look and see if I can confirm that for you. :-)

1lb. box of brown sugar is 2 1/4 cups
by: Angie

Thanks Caren!

Yes, I rang my mom who happened to have a 1 lb. box of brown sugar in the cupboard. It said that it was equivalent to 2 1/4 cups for those who buy brown sugar by the bag. :-)

No excuses not to try the hum-dinger balls now, is there?

Can't wait until Christmas
by: Marie

These are good. I ate some of these last year at my sister's house. I forgot about them until a few minutes ago and it took me a little while to remember what they were called. I am definately going to make some of these, but I don't know if I can wait until Christmas.Thank You for the recipe.
