Chocolate Turtle Candy

Indulge in Chocolate Turtle Candy for a delicious combination of chocolate, caramel, and pecans.

I remember these chocolate turtles from my childhood. My neighbors seemed to have them all the time, and it was a real indulgence to be given one.

As a child, I really wasn't that fond of pecans (although they have grown on me), but I still loved to eat these chocolate turtles as I recognized they were a special treat.

You can order some fantastic Chocolate Turtles at Lake Champlain Chocolates.

You can also find them at Fannie May Candies, but they call them "Pixies." No matter what you call them, they are really good!

If you absolutely, positively, can't wait for them to come in the mail, here is an emergency recipe that you can use to satisfy your cravings.

Chocolate Turtle Candy

  • 4 ounces pecan halves (about 72)
  • 24 Caramel candies
  • 1 teaspoon shortening
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Line a baking tray with aluminum foil, and lightly grease.

For each chocolate caramel turtle, place 3 pecan halves on the tray in a "Y" shape. Put one caramel on top of each pecan trio.

Bake in preheated oven for about 8-10 minutes, just until caramel is melted. Allow to cool.

Combine chocolate chips and shortening together in a double boiler, and heat over medium heat, stirring until melted and smooth. If you want, you can use the microwave for melting, but be sure to stir well every 30 seconds. Do not overheat.

Either spread the chocolate over each piece to make a chocolate turtle, or use a dipping fork and dip each turtle in the chocolate and return to the tray to set. Chill in the refrigerator. Store in an airtight container.

Be careful. These little critters tend to crawl away when your back is turned! Enjoy. :)
