Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter Balls

It is really hard to pass up the delicious taste of Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter Balls. They are such a delightful combination of salty peanut butter and sweet and creamy chocolate.

When I sink my teeth into one of these little treasures I admit that my eyes just close in true savoring fashion.

I have no doubt that I also probably give a slight moan of appreciation.

Chocolate Covered Peanut Butter Balls are one of my favorite chocolate treats. Here are a couple of yummy choices if you want to indulge.

I was born and raised in Ohio, the Buckeye State. As a child I enjoyed collecting buckeyes. When I was old enough to start making homemade candy, one of my favorite chocolate peanut butter candy recipes was the delicious Buckeye Candy. Even if you've never been to Ohio, I bet you'll enjoy this tasty treat.

Buckeye Candy

buckeyes
  • 1 pkg. chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups peanut butter
  • 1 lb. powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 bar paraffin, or 1-2 tablespoons shortening

Combine butter, peanut butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla. Mix well. Form into balls about 1" in size. Chill.

Melt chocolate and paraffin over double boiler or in a microwave (1 minute intervals, stirring every time). Dip balls in chocolate leaving a small portion uncovered to give it the "buckeye" look. A toothpick or wooden skewer will work. Place on wax paper covered cookie sheet until chocolate sets.

In Ohio, we call these gems Buckeye candy and leave a little spot free of chocolate to give it the authentic buckeye look.

However you decide to make these chocolate covered peanut butter balls, you will be a hit and a hero for making something so yummy.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Balls Recipe #2

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 lb. powdered sugar
  • 1 package chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon shortening

Cream together butter, peanut butter, and vanilla. Add powdered sugar until you reach the desired consistency (able to form into firm balls).

Roll mixture into 1 inch balls and place on waxed paper lined trays.

Melt chocolate and shortening in the top of a double boiler, stirring until smooth. You could also melt it in the microwave if you are very careful, stirring every 30 seconds. Be sure not to overheat.

Dip each ball in the chocolate, shaking off the excess. Return to waxed paper lined tray to cool. Refrigerate if necessary to set the chocolate.

Tip: If the chocolate starts to set half way through the dipping process, place it over the double boiler again for a minute or so to soften it back up.

Store these treats in an airtight container. I often store my chocolate covered peanut butter balls in the freezer in the hopes that I won't eat them up too quickly. It hasn't worked yet, but I keep trying. :)
