Carob Pods On A Carob Tree (by calafellvalo Flickr)

Hi Guys,
I have a Carob tree with lots of pods in my garden but how do I get the powder for your recipes from these pods?
Thanks for your help,
Harry

Hi Harry,

How to get carob pods to carob powder is a good question. I did a bit of checking and it appears it's not as difficult as I had at first thought. Here's what I learned.

Basically, you need to be sure the pods are ripe but not moldy. Wash the pods and then remove the seeds.

You can do that by prying them open with pliers or steaming them by using a pressure cooker at 15lbs. pressure for about 20 minutes.

Once the seeds are removed, you can roast the pods over some coals or heat then in an oven overnight at the very lowest temperature.

Finally, grind the husks in a blender or use a mortal and pestle until you have a fine powder.

Be sure to come back and tell us how turning carob pods to carob powder turns out for you.

Have fun,
Angie
