Can I add cocoa powder to my chocolate wafers to make the chocolate darker?

by Liz Brown
(Raleigh, NC)

Hi Angie,

I don't like the chocolate wafers I ordered. They are just not chocolatey enough. Can I add cocoa to them, maybe with some oil? What can I do to make them better? (p.s. thanks for the site.)

Liz Brown

Hi Liz,

Thanks for the kind words. To be honest, I haven't tried adding cocoa powder to melted chocolate wafers, but why not give it a try to see how it turns out?

You can just melt a handful and then add a little cocoa powder and give it a taste test. You'll have to decide if you like the result based on your own palate. ;) You may or may not need a little oil.

Another option is to just add some other good quality dark chocolate to the melted wafers. I think that would be your tastiest solution.

Let me know how it works out so that others with the same question can learn from your experiment - grin!

Have fun!

It worked!
by: Liz Brown

Angie,

I added the Baker's "unsweetened baking chocolate squares" to my semi-sweet wafers and it worked great! You have to chop it up real good because if of course doesn't melt at the same rate. Or I was also softening it in the microwave first then adding it to my wafers.

I used two bars of Baker's to one "batch" of wafers (which in my case was five large handfulls) and it made a really nice dark chocolate that hardened beautifully.

Thought I'd let you know.

Hi Liz,

Thanks for giving us a report on how it worked out with the Bakers chocolate and the wafers experiment.

I'm glad to hear it did the job.

Happy candy making!
