Best Brownie Recipe from Mom!

Best Brownie RecipeMe and my Dear Mother

I promised to share the Best Brownie Recipe that I've ever used and enjoyed, and it comes from my wonderful mother. Her chocolate brownies aren't like any other brownie I've eaten (and I've eaten a lot of brownies!).

In fact, some people consider my mom's brownies to be more like "cake brownies" and I suppose they are right.

These magnificent brownies aren't thick and chewy, but rather light and very moist. They are very "more-ish" as we say in Australia.

Ever since I was a little girl, it was a really special treat when my mom would say, "I'm going to make some brownies." She really only made them a few times per year, so I think it preserved the specialness of this treat.

Even after I was married and living on the other side of the world, when I made a trip "home" I would always ask mom to make some of her special chocolate brownies for me. I love them!

My darling mother went to be with the Lord in January, 2010. I miss her every day so much, and, of course, I'll never be able to have her make this best brownie recipe for me again.

However, I think she'd be quite pleased to have me pass on this wonderful family favorite brownie recipe to my friends here at Chocolate Candy Mall. I hope you will enjoy it as much as we have always done.

The Best Brownie Recipe Ever!

When my mom would make this recipe, she would use a very large baking tray (about 17 1/2" x 11"), but you can use two smaller pans if that is all you have. Grease your pan(s) and preheat the oven to 400°F.

Brownie Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of sugar
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 4 Tbs. cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 cup softened butter or margarine
  • 1/2 cup of milk with tsp. of vinegar (or 1/2 cup buttermilk)
  • 1 cup of water
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup Crisco (or veg. shortening)

  1. In a large bowl combine the sugar, flour, cinnamon, and baking soda and set aside.

  2. In a medium saucepan combine the cocoa, butter, water, and Crisco and bring to a boil, stirring gently. Pour over dry mixture.

  3. Add eggs, vanilla, and milk and mix well.

  4. Pour into your greased pan(s) and bake at 400° F. for 20 minutes. (After the first 10 minutes of baking, start preparing your icing).

Icing Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • 4 Tbs. cocoa powder
  • 6 Tbs. milk
  • 4 1/2 cups of powdered (icing) sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

In a medium saucepan combine the first three ingredients and bring to the boil, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat and beat in the powdered sugar and the vanilla until smooth.

As soon as the brownies come out of the oven, pour the icing mixture over the top. Allow to cool before serving.

You may have noticed this brownie recipe calls for cinnamon. I almost consider that as a "secret" ingredient, because I think it's one of the reasons this particular chocolate brownie recipe tastes so good.

Ultimately, I'm sure that I consider this to be the best brownie recipe because it was made by the best mom in the world and was always made with such love. You probably have loving memories of your own favorite brownie recipes, too. Add yours here and be sure to share the loving memories that go along with it that makes it so special to you.

Blessings,

Angie
